Venus Williams is set to make her Grass debut of the season as she returns back to her old hunting ground at the All-England Club. Venus won 5 of her 7 Grand Slams at Wimbledon and also finished as the runner-up at Wimbledon on 4 occasions with the latest being the 2017 Wimbledon final where she lost to Garbine Muguruza. In remaining 3 finals she lost to her sister Serena Williams.

Venus was surprised in the first round by then 15-year old Coco Gauff in the 2019 Wimbledon which was the last time Venus stepped on a Grass court. The 2021 season has been a rather difficult one for the 41-year old who comes to Wimbledon with a poor streak of 5 consecutive defeats.

Mihaela Buzarnescu will also be making her Grass debut for the season as like many players she decided to not participate in the Grass tournaments that build up to the Grand Slam. She had reached the 2nd round at the 2019 Wimbledon where she lost to eventual champion Simona Halep in straight-sets.

Buzarnescu comes to the competition with a second round defeat at the 2021 French Open where she was defeated by Serena Williams in what was a thrilling encounter between the two players.

This will be the 2nd meeting between the duo and their first on Grass having previously met at the 2019 Australian Open where Venus won in 3-sets in their 1st round encounter. Venus Williams leads the head-to-head tie 1-0.

Mihaela comes into the tie with a career Grass record of 17-14 and an overall season record of 8-12. Apart from a 6-6 record on Hardcourts, she was 2-3 on Clay and 0-3 on Indoor Hardcourts matches. She has a 5-4 record at the Wimbledon and can be a tough test for Venus who is struggling for form since long back.

Venus takes the court with a career Grass record of 67-16 and an overall season record of 2-7. She last won a match in the first round of the 2021 Australian Open. She has an outstanding record of 74-14 at the Wimbledon which includes both her Singles and Doubles matches. Looking at these numbers and her track record, Venus gets the edge for this match.
