Two-times grand slam winner, Kvitová began her 2021 season in the Yarra Valley Classic, where she was seeded fourth, defeating Venus Williams in straight sets in her first match before losing in three sets to 14th seed Nadia Podoroska in the next round. Kvitová was seeded ninth at the 2021 Australian Open, but she was defeated in three sets by Sorana Cîrstea.

Kvitová, the 11th seed, saved a match point in the first round against Greet Minnen en way to a set victory but was forced to retire from the event owing to an ankle injury acquired during media duties.

Stephens continued to struggle with form and was unable to get past the first round of numerous events in 2021, and he was on a five-match losing skid that began with a second-round loss at the 2020 French Open. She reached the second round of the 2021 Mutua Madrid Open once more, but it was not enough to keep her position, and she dropped out of the top 60 before the 2021 Italian Open (tennis).

She qualified for the tournament’s main draw as a fortunate loser after falling in the qualifiers in the second round but losing in the first round to her friend and major competitor Madison Keys.
