“Would be incredibly surprised to play Wimbledon” Roger Federer says there is no surety about his 2022 season
Roger Federer
Roger Federer is arguably the greatest tennis player of all times. With 20 grand slams, 310 weeks as the world no. 1, and his incredible personality, Federer has amassed a legion of fans worldwide. And all of them have the same question: When is Roger Federer returning to the ATP Tour?
The last few years have been marred with injury for Roger Federer. In 2016, he retired after Wimbledon and underwent the first surgery in his career. Post this, he made an incredible comeback. He won the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2017, and the latter again in 2018. His title count reached 103, and he spent another 8 weeks as world no. 1. However, things started slowing down for the Swiss maestro again in 2019. In 2020, he decided to go under the knife twice, and did not win any titles. After a rocky season this year, which ended with quarterfinal defeat to Hubert Hurkacz, Federer withdrew from the remainder of the season. After this, he underwent surgery again. He was seen using crutches at the Laver Cup, but has since stopped using them.
Roger Federer clears the air around possible Australian Open appearance:
Recently, tennis coach Darren Cahill made a statement that Roger Federer has resumed practice, and will be making a comeback at the 2022 Australian Open. Later, Cahill admitted to have misunderstood the news that was shared with him. Roger Federer was later questioned on the same issue.
In an interview with the Tribune de Genève, Roger Federer said “I would be incredibly surprised if I were to play again already at Wimbledon (2022). Australia is not an option at all. But that’s no surprise for me. Even before the operation, we knew that a break of many months would be necessary afterwards.”
“Not the same as 2016” – Roger Federer
Roger Federer said that although he retired from the remainder of the season in a manner similar to 2016, however, his medical condition is not the same as the last time. “I wanted to wait for the first major check-up before making a public statement, and the check-up was very encouraging. I have started a long rehabilitation process in which I put all my heart and soul. But the situation is not the same as in 2016. I have to be patient” he added.
