Former world number 3 Elina Svitolina had a mixed 2021. While the Ukrainian won the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, her poor patches of form in meant she dropped out of the top 10 in the rankings. However, following a resurgent run after her successful Olympics campaign, the 27 year old won her 16^th WTA title in the form of the Chicago Women’s Open.

Anastasia Gasanova meanwhile had a decent year herself. The Russian reached a career-high ranking of 136 this year. The Russian’s biggest victory was when the then world number 292 defeated world number 6 Karolina Pliskova in the second round at Abu Dhabi, causing a major upset. Apart from that, the 22 year old also reached the round of 16 of the Transylvania Open and the Quarter-final of the Astana Open. The youngster would now look to make her maiden appearance in a Grand Slam in 2022 after a solid season.
