Ash Barty has been the player to beat since her return to the tour post the disappointment of the Australian Summer. Her decision to skip the middle eastern leg of the tour, in hindsight now looks like a wise move.

Barty has in the last four events she has participated in, has won two, reached the finals in one and finished as the quarter-finalist in another. Her triumphs came in the Miami Open and the Stuttgart Open. The defeat in the Finals of the Madrid Open to Aryna Sabalenka would have hurt though. In Rome, she had a bye in the first round, in the second she beat Yaroslava Shvedova in straight sets, 6-4 6-1. Her opponent in the third round is the new resurgent Veronika Kudermetova.

Kudermetova has started the clay court swing of the year with aplomb. She won the Charleston Open, and followed it up with a semi-final appearance at the Istanbul cup. At Madrid she lost out in a hard fought three set encounter to Petra Kvitova. At Rome, she took out fourteenth seed Elise Mertens in the first round and in the second got the better of French woman Caroline Garcia 6-4 6-4.

Barty on her day is unbeatable on clay, but as she showed against Shvedova in the previous round, she can at times be a slow starter. Also, her serve has not been up to the mark in her recent matches. Kudermetova is a dangerous opponent, and she will make you pay if you are having a bad day. Unless she ends up having a very bad day, Barty should see this through.
