Coco Gauff announced herself  on clay this season by reaching the Quarter-finals of the Charleston Open 2021. In the Madrid Open that followed, she lost in the very first round. But, Gauff exceeded expectations at the Italian Open, by getting some outstanding results and consequently breaking into the top-30 in the World. Gauff ended the Rome sojourn at the Semi-final stage, ousted by the eventual champion Iga Swiatek. Gauff lost that match in straight sets 6-7 3-6.

At Parma Gauff has picked up from where she left off in Rome. In the first round she got the better of Kaia Kanepi, and defeated Camila Giorgi in the second. In the Quarter-finals she beat fifth seed Amanda Anisimova. In the Semis she sent home Kateřina Siniaková in three sets, 7-6 1-6 6-2. In the Finals she will face Qiang Wang of China.

Wang has a highest ranking of No.12 in the world and has two WTA Titles to her credit. In 2020 she scored a victory over Serena Williams, the highlight of her career so far. In the 2021 Clay court leg, she has managed just first round appearances so far. But, in Parma she is slowly starting to rediscover her game. In the first round here, she beat Misaki Doi of Japan. In the second round she got the better of Martina Di Giuseppe. The Quarter-finals saw her beat the second seed Petra Martić in three sets, 7-6 3-6 7-5. In the Semis she overcame old enemy Sloane Stephens in straight sets, 6-2 7-6. With this victory, Wang leads Stephens 3-0 in career head to heads.

If Gauff wins the Final she will reach a career high ranking of No.25 in the World. With all the stamina and athletic ability that Gauff has, with all the effort that she puts in to chase balls down and win those points, it must frustrate her no end that she serves truck loads of double faults. In the tournament so far she has already served 24 double faults, and 11 in the Semi-finals alone.

Wang plays safe tennis. While serving her focus is to put serves in rather than going for glory and she is good with her defense, her returns. If Gauff can keep the double fault count down, this match is hers to lose.
