‘You can do better,’ Serena Williams slams New York Times for a wrongly published photo, newspaper apologizes

Serena Williams calls out NY Times

American tennis legend Serena Williams is currently in recovery and hence hasn’t played competitive tennis for the last 8 months. She got injured in her first-round match at Wimbledon 2021 and is expected to stage a comeback in a couple of months. Serena is using her time off the tennis court wisely and does a lot of productive things.

She keeps her fans updated about various stuff. Recently, Serena Williams’s early-stage venture capital firm, Serena Ventures, has raised a huge inaugural fund of $111 million. This fund will be invested in founders with diverse points of view aiming for growth. In fact, the firm is already an active angel investor with a portfolio of 60 companies.

This update was published in New York Times’ print edition, which has sparked controversies for different reasons altogether. Serena Williams herself slammed and called out NY Times for wrongly publishing her picture in the column. The newspaper published her sister, Venus Williams’ picture under her name. The 23-time grand slam champion took to Twitter to address the issue and slam NY Times.

“No matter how far we come, we get reminded that it’s not enough. This is why I raised $111M for @serenaventures. To support the founders who are overlooked by engrained systems woefully unaware of their biases. Because even I am overlooked. You can do better, @nytimes,” she wrote.

A day after Serena posted the message, the newspaper quickly accepted their mistake and apologized for the same. They said that this was an error while selecting photos for the print edition, and it did not appear in the online edition. They also ensured that corrections will appear in the next day’s newspaper.

As for Serena, she is currently in Paris attending various fashion events. She recently attended the Balmain Fashion Show where she donned a green velvet blazer with a black outfit. Brazilian and PSG footballer, Neymar, was also snapped with Serena.
