Zidansek has been enjoying a pretty fruitful time on the clay this season. Earlier in the European clay-court swing, she made the finals of Bogota and surprised one and all by reaching the semifinals of the 2021 French Open, before she was downed by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Despite her first round exit at Wimbledon, she continued to focus on the dirt and made the quarterfinals of Hamburg, before making the final four at the Ladies Open. The top seed Zidansek also managed to see off the challenge of gutsy Lucia Bronzetti in three tight sets, in the quarterfinals. The Slovenian has won 19 matches on the clay this year and that might eventually come to her aid in making another WTA finals.

On the other hand, Zanevska comes into the semis after beating Natalia Vikhlyantseva in straight sets. She also beat Jil Teichmann and Stefanie Voegele in the first two rounds. The Belgian has played most of her matches for the year in the lower-ranked tournaments and overall has also won 18 titles and 12 runner-up titles at the ITF level. The 27-year-old has won 21 matches on the clay in 2021 and would be itching to upset the higher-ranked Zidansek and progress through to the finals in Lausanne.
