“Tera naak toot gaya hain, hospital jaana padega”- Sachin Tendulkar recalls never-heard story about Javed Miandad
Sachin Tendulkar and Javed Miandad
The legendary Sachin Tendulkar made his debut against Pakistan in 1989. He was 16 then but still had an impressive outing. During the fourth Test, he wasn’t wearing a helmet and a bouncer from Waqar Younis hit his nose and injured it.
Tendulkar continued to play but during that time, Pakistan’s legendary and former captain Javed Miandad said something to him. India had drawn the three Tests. “My first tour of Pakistan, we were playing the fourth Test, we had drawn the first three. In the last innings of fourth Test, we were some 36/4 down. I got hit off a bouncer from Waqar Younis on my nose, I wasn’t used to wearing a grill and my face was exposed to the blow. I broke my nose and I was bleeding,” Tendulkar told the story in the event organized by Infosys.
Sachin then added that right after he was hit by the bouncer, the game halted for a while. He believes that if he had walked back, Pakistan could have an upper hand over India. He also expressed that he was glad he didn’t head back to the dressing room and India were able to draw the series.
“Naturally, the game stopped. Pakistan players realized that it was a crunch moment. Had I walked off, they would’ve been in a dominating position. They wanted to finish the game and they wanted to win. In that buzz around me, Javed Miandad — we all know how he can be — he was nudging me and said, ‘Tera naak toot gaya hai, tere ko hospital jaana padega‘ (you’ve broken your nose, you need to go to the hospital).
