Terence Atmane gave Jannik Sinner a Pokemon card as a gift for his 24th birthday while they were waiting inside the tunnel for their semifinal clash in the Cincinnati Masters. Atmane’s main goal at present is to beat the best.

Since 2024, tennis has been dominated by only two players, Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, as they have featured in 31 finals, winning 23 titles. And Atmane has accepted that he has to do a great deal of work to beat them.

Although he has never faced the six-time Grand Slam champion, he has played the Italian twice, excluding the time Sinner trained with the Frenchman in Dubai heat before the 2025 season. Atmane’s coach, Guillaume Peyre, recently sat for an interview with Ubitennis, during which he was asked about Sinner’s role in Atmane’s career development.

Sinner is one of the best players in the world. It’s an honor and a great opportunity to challenge him. Jannik pushes Terence to play his best tennis. He respects him and, at the same time, tries to work hard to beat him.

In those two matches, Sinner clinched the win in straight sets in the Cincinnati semifinal. But in the fourth round of the China Open (which Sinner later won by beating Learner Tien), Atmane was successful in taking the second set off him.

Atmane has not yet clinched a title in his career, with his best tour-level performance being his semifinal appearance in Cincinnati. Because of an injury, Atmane was forced to withdraw from the US Open, but he returned to the tour at the Chengdu Open to kick-start his campaign on the Asian swing. Following the opening-round defeat in Chengdu and the fourth-round defeat to Sinner in Beijing, the 23-year-old was forced to give a walkover to Camilo Ugo Carabelli in the first round of the Shanghai Masters.

Jerzy Janowicz claims Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz’s tennis is less interesting than the Big 3

Former player Jerzy Janowicz, who was part of the ATP Tour from 2007 to 2022, implied that Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are playing boring tennis if compared to the time dominated by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. The former World No.14, who later switched to padel after his tennis retirement, faced every member of the Big 3, though he never could secure a win against them.

He lost to Nadal twice, and played one match each against Federer and Djokovic. During a padel event, the 34-year-old made his feelings known about the current situation of men’s tennis, dominated by Alcaraz and Sinner.

I really miss the rivalry between Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer. Also, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka, and David Ferrer. Today in tennis, everything seems more boring to me; it seems like everyone plays the same way. Maybe I’m a little nostalgic, but they were the most interesting to follow, more so than Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who are also very strong.

Federer and Nadal retired at the 2022 Laver Cup and 2024 Davis Cup, respectively. Djokovic, the last member of the legendary trio yet to call time on his career, was last seen in action at the Shanghai Masters, where his run was ended by qualifier Valentin Vacherot in the semifinals.

Sinner was projected to meet Djokovic in the semifinals, but he suffered from cramps during his third-round clash and eventually retired mid-match. He will next be playing the Vienna Open to bid for his second title in the tournament.

The Shanghai Masters was the sixth title the four-time Grand Slam champion failed to defend this year. Alcaraz had skipped the event because of an ankle injury he suffered during the Japan Open.
