If there’s one team that truly had a transformation last season, it’s the Houston Texans. Entering the league with a first-time head coach while having a playoff drought for the past many years, there were hardly many people betting on the team to win the AFC South, let alone a playoff game.
A major credit for the team’s success was the rookies, picked by new head coach DeMeco Ryans. Both quarterback C.J. Stroud and edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. dominated the field as they led the Texans to a playoff victory.
When CBS Sports asked Anderson Jr. about how the team is strategizing for the upcoming season and whether they will be able to live by the high expectations, the defensive end confidently responded in the affirmative. He mentioned that staying focused on their goals will be key for the team in the offseason.
It think it's very important that we keep the main thing the main thing, and the main thing right now is just us being able to control what we can control. And that's everybody showing up for workouts, everybody making sure that they're honing in on their playbook and everybody coming to practice, competing and having fun, so when the season comes, we can go out and compete and win games, and we can focus on getting to the ultimate goal, which is the Super Bowl. But for right now this offseason, we just want to keep building that team chemistry and making sure that nobody's expectations are higher than the expectations that we have for ourselves. Will Anderson Jr. said
The player insisted that they stay grounded as they continue to build towards their ultimate goal, the Super Bowl. He also emphasized on team chemistry and the importance of having high expectations of themselves.
Will Anderson Jr. claims coach DeMeco Ryans is always ‘on edge’
Despite being one of the youngest head coaches in the NFL, Texans HC DeMeco Ryans was able to significantly improve the team’s performance in his first season. He took them from a 3-13-1 record to 10-7 and winning a playoff game last season.
Will Anderson Jr. opened up on his coach during the same interview. Anderson described Ryans as always being on edge, which in turn keeps the team motivated and focused.
Honestly, he's been the exact same because his expectations are higher than anybody else's expectations can be for the team. He's always on edge, and that's how he keeps us - always on edge. He's always telling us this game could disappear at any moment, so take advantage of it.Will Anderson Jr. told CBS Sports
Anderson also discussed the splashy off-season additions such as Stefon Diggs, Joe Mix, and Danielle Hunter and the fact that the Texans are being considered a serious Super Bowl contender.
However, the massive turnout of 2023 does not guarantee their success for the upcoming season and that’s why, instead of celebrating over that the team is focusing on growth and becoming more successful than before.
