“The great Ben Stokes does it once again!”- Twitter goes frenzied as England are crowned T20 World Cup 2022 champions, beat Pakistan
England beat Pakistan to become T20 World Cup 2022 champions
Although the target of 138 looked easy for the English batters to chase away comfortably, Pakistan bowlers had other things on their minds. Shaheen Shah Afridi once again drew the first blood with the new ball, on the last ball of the first over by dismissing Alex Hales (one run off two balls).
Haris Rauf dismissed the second batter Phil Salt in the fourth over. After his wicket, Jos Buttler and Harry Brook tried to stabilize the innings. In the fifth over, Babar Azam handed the ball to Naseem Shah to take a wicket, and Naseem kept pressurizing Buttler with length balls, but the latter’s scoop shot for a six at least helped him to take the pressure off. But Rauf, in the sixth over, did the rest where Naseem had left.
Buttler had scored 26 runs off 17 balls and had smashed three fours and a six. On the third ball of the sixth over, Rauf delivered a length ball, which Buttler edged back to Mohammad Rizwan from behind the stumps. England’s top-scorer departed, and Pakistan gained full control of the match.
However, Brook and Ben Stokes played sluggish innings but kept the scoreboard moving until Shadab Khan broke the partnership in the 13th over. He pitched the ball wide, and Brook fetched this one toward long off. He hit it flat, but Shaheen Afridi there, grabbed a good catch but ended up hurting his right knee. This big fish tried to bowl later but couldn’t and left the field.
England needed run-a-ball, but they tried to send the ball toward the boundary, as their runs were coming slowly. Moeen Ali smashed three boundaries and shifted the momentum.
Although Moeen was dismissed in the penultimate over, the job was already done. Stokes played a scratchy inning at the start but accelerated in the last overs. He played a match-winning knock in the ODI World Cup in 2019, and he played a match-winning knock in the T20 World Cup in 2022.
Indeed when it mattered the most, Stokes displayed what a precious player he is. He scored an unbeaten 52 runs off 49 balls with five fours and a maximum to steer England to the target. So, in the end, England are crowned the T20 World Cup 2022 champions and became the second team, after West Indies, to lift the trophy twice.
