Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic faced off for the first time in the semifinal of the Mutua Madrid Open, where the world number 1 faced the full might of an inspired Alcaraz. Djokovic has started getting his colors back as the clay season heads towards the French Open. On the other hand, Carlos Alcaraz has been on a tremendous run as he has won several tournaments this year, and his runs in Indian Wells and other tournaments, including here in Madrid, have been imposing.

Carlos Alcaraz has impressive abilities to produce bullet-like forehand winners, spin heavy drop shots, and mighty cross-court backhands. The more awe-inspiring thing is his ability to disguise his shots and always be prepared to spring surprises on the unsuspecting opponent. Alcaraz tackled the Rafael Nadal challenge pretty well in the quarterfinals as he toppled the Spaniard and became the first teenager to beat Rafa on clay. In their semifinal clash, Alcaraz has also done quite well to hold his own against Novak Djokovic. His weapon against Novak was his surprisingly well-disguised drop shots, which were executed to perfection.

Patrick Mouratoglou, the former coach of Serena Williams and the current mentor to the former world number 1, Simona Halep, has praised the quality of drop shots the teenager has been able to produce against Novak Djokovic. He stressed on the quality and execution of the shots on the part of the youngster to stun Djokovic.

Jose Morgado, a tennis journalist and commentator, was also quite appreciative of the shots. He felt that there were no words that could do justice to the drop shots by Alcaraz, so he just wrote the drop shots, and that should be enough to tell them that when a commentator is left speechless, it means those shots can just be enjoyed visually, and no words could do them any fairness.

Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic 6-7,7-6,7-6 as he became the youngest finalist in the history of the Mutua Madrid Open. He has proven himself on the biggest stage by defeating both Rafa and Novak in the same tournament in consecutive rounds.
