“The same thing the Russian gangsters did”- Chael Sonnen declares he would sue Floyd Mayweather too amid Logan Paul payment row

Logan Paul vs Floyd Mayweather- Chael Sonnen

Everyone around the world is pondering in shock upon how Floyd Mayweather lacked the money to pay his opponent, Logan Paul, including MMA Legend Chael Sonnen. Mayweather, a retired undefeated pro-boxer fought an exhibition with internet sensation Paul back in June 2021. Now some time ago, Paul took a dig at Mayweather through a headline that said that Mayweather earned so much money from his fight with Paul fight that he could buy the founder of Amazon.com Jeff Bezos’ private jet.

Paul said in his reaction through a tweet “Yeah because the dirty little rat hasn’t paid me yet lol. It’s been 6 months.” This started some serious speculation against Mayweather for not paying his opponent in a fight that was organised by his promotional firm, The Money Team aka TMT.

Chael Sonnen says even he could’ve taken Mayweather’s word for a deal, here’s why

Sonnen took to his Youtube Channel to talk about how Floyd Mayweather’s promotional company is not an actual company because they lack the concept of a “boss” who’s supposed to pay all his workers, which includes the opponents of your fighters as well. Eventually, he makes a unique comparison of this whole payment situation with the UFC’s business history.

“Remember these gangsters out of Russia that was trying to do this to Dana [White, President of the UFC]?” said Sonnen “[Saying] ‘I want to be co-promoter with you’ Dana’s going ‘what are you bringing to the table? I’m a boss, are you a boss too?’ ‘Yeah I’m a boss too’ ‘Who do you got let us see your team put your cards on the table’, Dana said ‘I can’t do business with these guys

The Money Team did the same thing as those Russian gangsters but they get people to say yes, now it’s highly unfortunate and quite frankly I would take Floyd’s word too,” continues Sonnen “Athletes, particularly fighters, wrestlers with these blue-collar guys, [are] men you take a centre word [for]…” he said.

Not sure but most probably, Sonnen might be talking about the time the UFC badly wanted to sign former Pride FC and Strikeforce heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko but fell apart because the deal given to President Dana White in exchange for getting Fedor signed was to let his promotional agency work with him and allow the agency’s organised fights promoted on the UFC platform. This was back in 2011-12 when the UFC was close to buying Strikeforce.

What do you make of Sonnen’s analogy of the whole Logan Paul- Floyd Mayweather pay situation? Do you think he is right in putting on a case for the Mayweather’s promotion being a potentially unsuccessful business runner for promoting fights and fighters? Do you think we will see Paul back again inside the ring, for a professional or exhibition bout? Do you think Mayweather will fight in the exhibition again?
