The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai
Mumbai’s famous Wankhede Stadium is the home ground of the Mumbai Indians, the five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise. Last year, when the cash-rich league was held only in Maharashtra due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mumbai Indians had the advantage of playing in front of home fans but that didn’t help them at all as they ended up at the bottom of the points table.
This year, they will start their campaign against Faf du Plessis-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Sunday (April 2) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The Wankhede Stadium will host its first IPL match on Saturday (March 8) between Mumbai and their arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Situated near the Marine drive-Arabian sea in the Churchgate area of South Mumbai, the Wankhede Stadium has a capacity of 33,108 after it underwent renovations for the 2011 ODI World Cup where India emerged victorious after 28 years by beating Sri Lanka in the final. However, before the renovation, it had a capacity of 45,000.
The ground is known for its small boundaries and batting-friendly pitch. Many IPL teams have crossed the 200-run mark several times.
