Tennis player John Millman has created a stir by saying that death threats are not new in tennis and their occurrence is quite frequent. The statement has come in support of AFL rugby team player Callan Ward.

According to Callan, he received several death threats on social media after a recently happened football match.

The incident happened when Callan Ward, playing for the Greater Western Sydney Giants team, scored in dying moments of the match against Essendon and helped his team secure a win.

After the AFL match, Callan Ward said he was at the receiving end of numerous death threats on social media, even targeting his family. He wants this cruelty to stop, citing that not every player is immune to such abuse.

Reacting on the same, World No.43 John Millman said, “These threats have become a part of the tennis world. They are occurring almost every single day.”

The Australian is due to play the US Open scheduled to start in late August. The decision has come as a surprise since his compatriots, Ash Barty and Nick Kyrgios have withdrawn their names due to health-related concerns in the current COVID-19 pandemic.

As said by Millman, death threats are indeed not new to tennis. The recent incident involved World No.1 Novak Djokovic, when sinister messages of death of the Serb were painted on the walls of Croatia.

This happened after Novak received severe backlash for organizing the Adria Tour in Belgrade amidst the pandemic. The Tour resulted in several superstars testing positive for COVID-19, even Djokovic himself.
