“This guy is terrible” Gaudio’s confession interview on Federer goes viral

Swiss tennis great Roger Federer has had a storied tennis career winning a record 20 majors and 103 ATP Tour titles along the way.
But when he started his career, some did not expect the Swiss to achieve any kind of heights in the sport of tennis. Among them is former French Open champion Gaston Gaudio.
The Argentine’s first analysis of the tennis player who would become one of the best of all time, of course, was wrong.
“I don’t see it as good,” he said during the first match he saw from Federer live. Some time ago, during an Uruguay Open, he acknowledged, “For what I missed! The best of all life, in all history.” the video recently resurfaced on social media.
“I watched him in Rome in ’98 or ’99, I don’t remember exactly. A lot was expected of Federer then and many said he would be really good. He played qualifiers or the first round in Rome, and I was there with Benito Perez Barbadillo (current spokesman for Rafael Nadal)”, Gaudio recalled.
He’s never going to be the best in the world: Gaston Gaudio on Federer
“I told him, ‘This guy is terrible. He’s never going to be the best in the world, his backhand is really bad.’ Imagine how wrong I was at that point,” the Argentine added.
Federer and Gaudio have met five times, and in the last duel, the Argentine got humiliated as the Swiss beat him 6-0, 6-0 at the tournament in Shanghai. It was also the first-ever white-wash then, in the 35-year history of the year-end men’s championships.
However, the match that Gaudio recounted during the interview was the opening round of the 2003 Toronto Masters in Canada.
“I was winning 4-1 in the third set,” Gaudio said. “15-40. Ace, ace, ace, ace.”
“I felt that I could beat him, that he was there. But he always won, I don’t know how he did but the moment he had to win the point, he won it”, concluded Gaudio.
