Real Madrid center back Raphael Varane has taken full responsibility for defensive errors that led to Real Madrid’s elimination in the UEFA Champions League. Manchester City secured another 2-1 victory over Real Madrid at the Etihad stadium in England. The two sides have been involved in two legged last 16 ties in the European competition. Both times Manchester City have emerged victorious with a 2-1 lead over Real Madrid. The Cityzens are through to the quarterfinals after defeating the Los Blancos  4-2 aggregate on aggregate.

Despite Karim Benzema’s equalizer, Real Madrid were not able to overturn the tie. It was game over with Varane’s second defensive error that led to a goal from Gabriel Jesus. Both Manchester City goals were conceded due to Varane’s miserable defending.

Varane on his defensive errors

In a post-match Interview Varane said, “This defeat is mine, I have to accept it,” he told reporters after the game. I am responsible for this defeat. We had prepared well but you pay for your mistakes. I am sad for my team-mates. At 1-1 we had the chance to qualify and today things did not go to plan.”

Zidane on Varane

Real Madrid’s manger Zidane is looking at the positives from the 2019-2020 campaign. The Frenchman backed his club’s defender.

In a press conference after the match Zidane said, “We will tell Varane, keep your head up,” the manager told reporters after the final whistle at the Etihad. I prefer to dwell on what most of my players achieved over the course of the season, which was spectacular. Our season has been very good. We have not ended with a good result, but the season has been good, despite everything. We must be very happy with what we have done. We lost the two games, and in the end they deserved it. In first 15 or 20 minutes there was a feeling we could not get past their press. But then we played pretty well. In the second half, when we were on top, we gave up the second goal.”

Now Manchester City face Lyon in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League. Guardiola’s side will be hoping to go all the way this time after overcoming the Kings of Europe.
