There are few players who achieved more success at the Australian Open than Roger Federer. The man with 20 Majors, Federer enjoyed a legendary career since turning professional in 1998.
He made his debut at the Australian Open in 1999. In his illustrious career that spanned over two decades, Federer took home six Australian Open titles between 2004 and 2018.
The Norman Brookes Challenge Cup in 2004 was his second Major after the 2003 Wimbledon. Federer beat Marat Safin to clinch the title at Melbourne Park and missed completing the Calendar Grand Slam due to his unsuccessful run at the French Open.
His next five titles in the Major event Down Under came in 2006, 2007, 2010, 2017, and 2018. He came close to his seventh Australian Open title when he reached the semifinal in 2020.
Roger Federer believed he could win one more Major before retirement
Novak Djokovic met Roger Federer in the 2020 Australian Open semifinal. After dropping sets in his previous three matches, Federer set up the blockbuster clash with Djokovic but was no match for the Serb.

The then 38-year-old lost the match 7-6, 6-4, 6-3 to Djokovic, who at that time was a seven-time Australian Open champion. After his exit, Federer was asked if he still believed he had the chance to win at least one more Grand Slam title before he hung up his racket.
Yes, I do believe that. I think by having the year that I had last year, also with what I have in my game, how I’m playing, I do feel that, yeah. I’m confident. I’m happy how I’m feeling, no plans to retire. From that standpoint, we’ll see how the year goes, how everything is with the family. We’ll go from there. Of course, I hope to be back.
Roger Federer had said at the press conference
Following his Australian Open exit, Federer didn’t participate in the rest three Grand Slam events. The semifinal against Djokovic was his last match of the 2020 season.
Did Roger Federer win another Grand Slam title?
Although Roger Federer believed that he had the ability to clinch one more Grand Slam title, he never came close to another Major. The following year after defeat to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semifinal, Federer gave a walkover to Matteo Berrettini after reaching the French Open fourth round due to concerns about his recovery from surgeries.

He then played at Wimbledon but suffered a quarterfinal defeat to Hubert Hurkacz. The eight-time Wimbledon champion then skipped the US Open as he was recovering from the knee surgery.
The tennis world saw Federer win a Grand Slam title for the last time when he lifted the 2018 Australian Open. The Swiss maestro beat Marin Cilic to become the first man to win 20 Grand Slam singles titles.
The last time Federer stepped onto the court for an official match was at the 2022 Laver Cup. In front of his biggest rivals, Federer, who lost the doubles match he played with Rafael Nadal, closed the most remarkable chapter of his life.
