Kai Havertz opened the scoring for Chelsea after his deflected short went into the back of the net via Ben Godfrey. The German claimed the goal but it was adjudged as an own goal from the Everton player.
Havertz had another goal ruled out by VAR as the replay showed there was handball situation in the buildup to the goal. However the youngster made repairs as he was brought down by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and the resultant penalty was scored by Jorginho.
Thomas Tuchel was full of praise for Havertz and highly appreciated his performance. Mason Mount will be missing against Atletico Madrid due to suspension and this match was crucial for Havertz’s confidence.
“We deserved to win. It was a very difficult first half but we controlled it completely. Second half we increased our level and had a lot of dangerous attacks,” Tuchel said.
“Very pleased with Kai. It was the trust we gave him and he used that trust. He is a player who has all the ability to be a dominant figure in the offence and he stepped up.
“You see the quality of the players and the club. It is a pleasure to be on the sideline and work with the team. Everybody in the club is doing everything to compete at this level.”
