Aussie Nick Kyrgios is an extremely popular and polarising figure in the tennis community. The World No.45 almost sports an ‘unbeatable stride’ on court when he’s not consumed by his own demons. He was last seen in action against Ugo Humbert at Mexican Open.

While Kyrgios hasn’t been seen on court since February, he has lent more than a helping hand to many in need. Plus, the 25-year-old has been vocal about the need for safety whilst we are under the dome of this pandemic.

In this age, mental health is given more importance by the day in our community. In the same vein, Kyrgios has opened up about the hand he was dealt and the steps he’s taken to overcome it.

In an interview with The Herald, Kyrgios revealed that he was considering to take a year off even before the pandemic hit. He further added that he was “seeing a psychologist before the ATP Cup earlier this year.”

Nick stated that he worked on himself with the psychologist and tried to get to a place where he was happy and engaging with other things in his life.

The toll that his depression took on him resulted in him not being able to even look at a tennis court. “I had no happy feelings. Had no desire or motivation to be out there,” he said.

Tennis turned into an obligation for the Aussie. It didn’t contribute to his happiness. Rather, it acted as “a negative impact” on his life.

The recognition of the root of his issues allowed Nick to pursue other lines of work. He’s poured himself into his charity, NK Foundation. While he’s had some steep hills to climb in the past, Nick has battled through and emerged on the bright side.
