Three interesting facts about the Premier League (until Matchday 14)

Three interesting facts about the Premier League (until Matchday 14)
Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United have served the goods this season in terms of goals and great matches

This season’s Premier League is special for the fact that it is the first full season where fans haven’t been allowed into stadiums. As a result performances haven’t been the same as away sides have benefitted from the absence of atmosphere created by the home fans. Results have been different and it has already become a Liverpool v rest of the league scenario now. Here we list three interesting facts observed until the matches of Matchday 14.

1. Reigning champions equal unwanted 67 years record

Liverpool astonishingly failed to do anything worthwhile against Aston Villa at Villa Park

Liverpool travelled to Villa Park on October 4th 2020 to play against Aston Villa. Little did they or anyone for the matter know that it was going to be their greatest humiliation. Premier League newcomer Ollie Watkins scored a hat-trick while captain Jack Grealish got a brace after the first half. Mohamed Salah toiled and got two goals on each half but the rest of the team couldn’t do much. As a result Liverpool had a goal difference of 0 as early as Matchday 4.

This loss of theirs as reigning champions equalled a 63 year old record set by Arsenal when they lost to Sunderland 7-1 in 1953. This was Jurgen Klopp’s heaviest defeat in all competitions and it forced Liverpool to come together and rally through the pain. Now they sit at the top of the table still recovering from injuries and a hectic schedule. Their goal difference is 17 now and they have a points difference of 2 points with second placed Everton and are yet to play their match this week.

2. 8 teams have conceded the same amount of goals as on 27th December

Burnley and Wolves are among the teams who have conceded 19 goals in this half of the season

Liverpool, Everton, Leicester, Southampton, West Ham, Wolves, Arsenal and Burnley have all conceded 19 goals. As of writing this article, Liverpool, West Ham, Wolves and Burnley haven’t played yet while the rest have played. This includes the fact that Liverpool have lost Virgil van Dijk to injury and also conceded 7 against Aston Villa in October. From then they have rallied to get back on track and now sit at top of the table. Everton is in second place while Leicester is third and Southampton is 9th. West Ham and Wolves are in 10th and 11th respectively while Burnley is at 16th.

This goes to show unpredictable the season has been as different teams conceding the same number of goals still find themselves in different places.

3. Liverpool and Manchester United score and concede same number of goals in different weeks

Liverpool and Manchester United have scored and conceded 7 and 6 goals respectively wearing the same jersey

On 4th October of this year Manchester United conceded 6 goals against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford. Later that day Liverpool travelled away to Aston Villa and conceded 7 goals. History was repeated again, but in a different way as on 19th December Liverpool travelled to Selhurst Park. Their away form wasn’t the best this season and they were to face Crystal Palace.

Liverpool put 7 past Crystal Palace without reply and took top place in the Premier League table. They were trailing to Tottenham by goal difference and took back that too. Now they sit at the top with two extra points over second placed Everton and could go five points clear if they win against West Brom today. Similar to Liverpool’s destruction of Crystal Palace, Manchester United sunk Leeds United 6-2 at Old Trafford.

It was a week of similarities as Liverpool became the first team to concede and score 7 goals away from home wearing the same jersey. Similarly Manchester United conceded and score 6 goals at home wearing the same jersey.

Never has this been done before by even one team but this season had two teams doing it in the same matchday.

Truly when they say that this season is fully unpredictable and full of surprises, this is what they mean.
