Former World No.1 and India’s beloved, Sania Mirza has shed light on the trials and tribulations she had to fend off to maintain a healthy balance between her private and professional life. The six-time Grand Slam champion was motivated by Serena Williams’ documentary, ‘Being Serena,’ to shed light on this very facet of her life.

This documentary shares the story which is not unlike that of countless of women. It, along with Mirza’s deeply insightful letter, reflect the woes that females go through when their hand is forced to make choices which a man wouldn’t usually have to make; that of choosing between their family and their dreams.

Mirza’s inspiring address to the masses

In her letter posted on twitter, the tennis ace talks about the stereotype that is still prevalent in our society. She stresses on the conditions that are existent without ever being spoken out loud for majority of the women.

Mirza reflects on the abysmal chances that one has to succeed, especially in sports. In addition, if the athlete goes on conceive, a judgement of “whether I will be able to make a comeback or not?” is ever so present.

Pregnancy causes a myriad of transmutations in a woman’s body. It puts a woman out of practice for months and can lead to irreversible changes. Recognising this, Sania stated, “Having put-on around 23kgs during my pregnancy. I wasn’t sure if I was ever going to get back to being fit and playing tennis again.”

Further, she added that “with a lot of workout regimes and very strict diets,” she did make a comeback. Not only that, but she proceeded to lift the title at The Hobart International tournament.

Moreover, the Indian hailed Williams for her “fighting spirit” and for being the inspiration that she is, both on and off the court.
