Tokyo Olympics Badminton: PV Sindhu falters in semifinal, will face China’s Bing Jiao in bronze medal match

PV Sindhu has failed to book her place in a second straight Olympic final. She was defeated in straight sets by second seed Tai Tzu-ying, who sealed a maiden Olympic final berth. The Indian looked solid early on but the World number 1, Tai mounted a comeback to topple Sindhu in the all-important game.

Sindhu played with confidence and positivity in the first set drawing errors from Tai who had to go searching for extra options. The Chinese Taipei shuttler too looked sharp but seemed hesitant at times. Sindhu made sure that the pressure was on Tai forcing errors from the World no.1. Stepping up in the dying moments of the opening game, Tai took home the set 21-18 having trailed for the better part of it.

PV Sindhu came into the second game with renewed intensity and strategy. Unlike the first set, the sixth seed was more attacking using her power to shut down Tai. But it was not to be for the second seed has a plethora of shots in her arsenal. With a combination of drop shots and smartly placed smashes, Tai rushed to an eight-point lead.

Sindhu’s strategy backfired as she was outplayed 12-21 in the second set. She will now face China’s Bing Jiao in the bronze medal match. The bronze medal game is set to be another cracker of a match with two brilliant shuttlers facing off.
