The Tokyo Olympics came to a thrilling end on the 8th of August with as many as eight medal matches taking place on the final day. The United States of America (USA) stepped up in the eleventh hour to clinch three gold medals to pip rivals China and secure the top spot on the table.

The US topped the medals tally with 39 gold medals, just one more than China. But a fortnight following the conclusion of the sporting extravaganza, the Asian powerhouse has claimed victory at the 32nd Olympic Games with an embellished table which has been shared by Chinese media and published widely on social media site Weibo.

China’s amended medal tally includes those won by Hong Kong and Taiwan. While both are Chinese territories, they compete separately at the Olympics. Hong Kong, depicted on the Olympic website as “Hong Kong, China,” clinched one gold, two silvers, and three bronze medals while Taiwan, which competes as Chinese Taipei, bagged two golds, four silvers, and six bronzes.

With the extra medals, China claims to have 42 golds, three more than the USA’s tally. Despite the addition, the Asian nation finished four medals short of the USA, which with 113 medals was the only nation to breach the century mark at Tokyo 2020.

Both Hong Kong and Taiwan are recognized as independent NOCs by the International Olympic Committee, whereas medals earned by athletes from Macau, another Chinese territory, count towards China’s overall tally. By the official table, Hong Kong managed a 49th place finish, while Taiwan came in 34th.
