Tokyo Olympics: Eliud Kipchoge successfully defends his men’s Olympic marathon title
Eliud Kipchoge
Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge bagged the gold medal at the men’s marathon clocking 2:08:38 hours at the Tokyo Olympics. He became the only third man to win back-to-back Olympic marathon titles. Kipchoge successfully defended his gold medal.
Kipchoge is dubbed as the greatest marathoner of all time. He has achieved numerous feats as a junior and a senior in the 5000m run. The legend switched to road running in 2012 and reached even higher heights. In 2018 he set the marathon world record with a time of 2:01:39 hours at the 2018 Berlin marathon.
At a special event in Vienna, Austria in 2019, he clocked an impossible time of 1:59:40 hours. However, it was not considered a world record as standard competition rules of pacing and fluids were not followed and it was not an open event.
Tokyo Olympics: Eliud Kipchoge defends his gold medal
Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge retained his marathon gold with a time of 2:08:38 hours at the recently concluded Tokyo Olympics. Abdi Nageeye of Netherlands clinched silver with a season best time of 2:09:58 hours. Bashir Abdi of Belgium won the bronze medal with a season best time of 2:10:00 hours.
Kipchoge finished 1 minute 20 seconds before the silver medallist Nageeye. The 34-year-old’s 80 seconds victory margin was the biggest since Frank Shorter’s 1972 Munich Games. The Kenyan star dominated the race and pushed ahead of the pack after hitting the 30km mark and proved his supremacy yet again.
Immediately after his finish, he lifted two fingers symbolising his second successive gold medal at the Olympics.
