Tokyo Olympics: Punjab Government renames 10 schools to honour Indian hockey players

The Indian men hockey team created history as they registered a sensational win against Germany to clinch the bronze medal. This ended India’s 41-year long wait for a medal in hockey, as Indian hockey players brought back the glory and revived hope in the country. The victory was an emotional one for everyone, as years of hard work had come to fruition.
Following their stellar show, the Punjab government has come up with a unique way to honour the men in blue, a side that featured numerous stars from the state. Punjab provided the second-largest contingent to the Tokyo Olympics after Haryana, with 20 athletes at games from the state. To honour the hockey team’s efforts, the state government renamed as many as 10 schools after the hockey stars.
10 schools renamed after Indian hockey players

Punjab’s School Education Minister Vijay Inder Singla shared that Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh, had approved of renaming government schools in honour of the Indian hockey players who played their part in the historic bronze medal-winning campaign. The Government Senior Secondary School (GSSS), Mithapur has been named after captain Manpreet Singh.

Earlier, the state government had announced cash prizes to honour the athletes after they returned home from Tokyo 2020. Each member of the Indian men hockey team hailing from the state was awarded Rs.2.51 crore each.
