Tokyo Olympics: Shohei Ono once again becomes the Olympic champion, he brings another gold medal for the Japanese Judo Team

The number 1 pound-for-pound Judoka, Shohei Ono claimed his second gold medal at the Olympic games. Ono competes at the -73 kg weight category and is internationally undefeated since 2015. The current champion had a lot on the line, and he lived up to everyone’s hope. One’s journey has been incredible, the “Japanese Shogun” had a target behind his back, and winning a second gold at the Olympic games cemented him as one of the best Judokas to ever walk this planet.
Ono faced Alexandru Raicu of Romania at the elimination round of 32 and landed a perfect Ippon to move on to the next stage. In the elimination round of 16, he defeated Bilal Cilogly of Turkey with a flawless Ippon to advance to the quarter-finals. In the quarter-final, he faced another top contender for gold Rustam Orujov of Azerbaijan. It was a tough fight for sure, but Ono managed to score two Waza-ari’s to claim his spot in the semi-finals. He faced and defeated Tsogtbaatar TSEND-OCHIR of Mongolia with a Waza-ari and moved into the finals. The final bout of -73 kg was between Shohei Ono and Lasha SHAVDATUASHVILI of Georgia, the fight went to the golden score but Ono managed to score a waza-ari to reclaim his Olympic gold.

Lasha faced and defeated Guillaume CHAINE of France at the elimination round of 32 to move on to the next round. He then defeated Aden-Alexandre HOUSSEIN of Djibouti to advance to the quarter-finals. In the quarter-final, he defeated Arthur MARGELIDON of Canada with an Ippon to get to the semi-finals. In the semi-final bout, Lasha faced another title contender An Changrim of the Republic of Korea to advance to the finals, he came up short against Shohei Ono of Japan and had to settle with silver.

Ochir defeated three opponents before facing the gold-medalist, Shohei Ono in the semi-finals, he lost that bout and moved into the repechage. He faced Arthur MARGELIDON of Cana in the bronze final contest and defeated him at an Ippon to claim the bronze medal.

An Changrim was another contender for gold this time, he defeated last Olympic’s -66kg gold medalist Fabio Basile in his first fight but lost the semi-finals to the silver medalist Lasha. Changrim faced Rustam Orujov of Azerbaijan in the bronze medal bout and defeated him with a waza-ari.
