Sifan Hassan of Netherlands has been crowned the new women’s 10,000m Olympic champion with a time of 29:55:32 minutes in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics. The long distance event is the ultimate test of endurance and stamina and has seen many athletes fight for the medals in the recent seasons.
The brutal conditions of Tokyo have become notorious by now with athletes struggling to cope with the humidity and the heat. A similar situation was seen in the women’s 10,000m as several runners withdrew mid-race. Even Sifan Hassan herself appeared to receive medical attention after the race.
Sifan Hassan was targeting a rare distance running treble of 5000m, 1500m and 10,000m. She bagged the gold in 5000m and a bronze at the 1500m. Now with a gold at the 10,000m she has concluded a successful Olympic campaign.
Sifan Hassan scorches through the sizzling heat
Dutch runner Sifan Hassan clinched the gold medal clocking 29:55:32 minutes. Kalkidan Gezahegne of Bahrain bagged silver with a timing of 29:56:18 minutes. Ethipian Letesenbet Gidey timed 30:01:72 minutes to win the bronze.
A tough competition was seen between the top three athletes with Gidey leading most of the race. Towards the end a conversation was seen between her and Hassan. In the last lap Hassan put on an incredible show and pulled away from the trio. In first few hundred metres of the last lap Gidey ran neck-to-neck with her however fell short towards the end.
In the last stretch Gezahegne gave a strong competition but Hassan sprinted to victory and grabbed her second gold.
