Avani Lekhara
India’s Avani Lekhara created history in shooting at Tokyo Paralympics in more ways than one, as she took home two medals in the most successful Paralympics for India.
Lekhara won a gold in the women’s 10m standing air rifle event, becoming the first woman to win gold, and the first shooter to win a medal at the Paralympics. That was not the end however, as the youngster took a bronze in the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions, creating history once again.
Lekhara became the first Indian woman to win multiple medals at the same Paralympics, and one of the youngest Indian medallists ever, at just 18-years-old. Avani also equalled the Paralympic Qualification Record in the women’s 10m air rifle.
“The Paralympics Still Feel Quite Surreal,” Avani Lekhara after Tokyo Paralympics
Avani took to Twitter to write about her journey and experience at the Paralympics. In a heart warming post she wrote that looking back at the Paralympics, everything felt quite surreal.
“While the feeling hasn’t sunk in yet, there’s unquestionably happiness in me. A sense of satisfaction that has come through, executing perfectly, after enormous effort, hard work, and dedication as a collective unit in all of the training sessions,” said Lekhara.
Avani said that she was touched beyond words by the kind words and support of the nation. She dedicated her win to everyone who dared to dream, saying that dreams come true. She expressed her gratitude for each and everyone who she could not reply to, and sent her appreciation.
