Tokyo Paralympics: Powerlifter Sakina Khatun manages 5th place finish in women’s 50kg final as Jaideep Deswal finishes without a single successful attempt
Sakina Khatun
India’s powerlifting campaign at the Tokyo Olympics came to an end without a medal. India featured in the men’s 65 kg and women’s 50kg event. It was a mixed performance by the Indian powerlifters on the third day of the Paralympics. Sakin Khatun finished a creditable fifth in the women’s 50kg category.
The 2014 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist produced a best effort of 93kg. Sakina lifted 90kg in her first attempt. She went for 93kg in her second attempt but failed before successfully lifting it in her third attempt. China’s Dandan Hu took home the gold with a best effort of 120kg, while Rehab Ahmed (120kg) and Olivia Broome (107kg) took the silver and bronze respectively.
Jaideep Deswal’s switch didn’t comeoff at Tokyo Paralympics
At the 2012 London Paralympics, Jaideep Deswal participated in the men’s discus throw F42 and achieved a very creditable 7th place finish. Nine years down the lane, Jaideep represented his country in powerlifting at the Tokyo Paralympics. It indeed was a commendable feat as there are not many sportspeople who are good enough to compete at the global level in two different sports.
Unfortunately, his Paralympics debut in the new sport didn’t go as planned. Jaideep failed to pull off even a single successful attempt. The 31-year-old took three attempts at lifting 167kg. China’s Lei Liu bagged the gold medal with a best effort of 198kg while Amir Jafari (195kg) and Hocine Betir (187kg) made up the top three.
