The Tokyo Paralympics have been written in the history books, as the nation sent its largest contingent to Japan. The results were phenomenal as the contingent produced its largest ever medal tally, collecting a total of 19 medals.

As para-badminton made its debut at the Paralympics, Pramod Bhagat clinched the gold medal in the men’s SL3 category, winning the first of the 4 medals in the event.

Receiving a grand welcome after reaching India, the fan fare surrounding the athletes was well deserved. Bhagat, who hails from Odisha was given a hero’s welcome by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik after landing in the state on Friday.

Hundreds of supporters showed their support as the ace badminton player landed at the Biju Patnaik International Stadium, as the celebration of dhol Tasha sounded in the background. Odisha Sports Minister Tusharkanti Behera, former hockey player Dilip Tirkey and and sports secretary R Vineel Krishna were there to receive Bhagat at the airport.

Bhagat was felicitated by Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium after his arrival in the state. Bhagat was given a cash award of Rs. 6 crore and awarded a Group A Government job for his contribution to the Tokyo Paralympics. Bhagat became the first athlete from Odisha to win a good at either the Olympics or Paralympics.

Patnaik said that it gave him immense pleasure to felicitate Bhagat for his achievements. The CM said that the nation was proud of Pramod’s immense success and it will forever be remembered by India. His achievements have redefined how Sports can uplift and empower lives.

“You have inspired a generation of sportspersons and para sportspersons to create their own destiny. I wish you all the very best for greater glories. We will continue to support you in your journey ahead,” said Patnaik
