Tommy Paul overcame Canada’s unseeded Gabriel Diallo 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-1, 7-6(3) at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in the third round on August 31st to set up a fourth-round clash with first seed Jannik Sinner. Unlike Paul, Sinner eased past his third-round opponent Christopher O’Connell 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.

Paul has reached the fourth round of the US Open for two consecutive years. Last year, he was eliminated from the competition by compatriot Ben Shelton. Sinner, on the other hand, gave his best performance in 2022 when he reached the semifinals. Last year, the World No.1 was knocked out of the US Open by Alexander Zverev in five sets.

I don’t know how Sinner’s match went, but if he won, I definitely don’t have an easy match ahead.
Tommy Paul said after the match

Paul has met Sinner thrice on the ATP Tour, winning just one game. They previously clashed at the Canadian Open last year, which Sinner won. Paul, in that on-court interview, was told that he indeed would play Sinner and was asked what everyone would expect from the match.

Hopefully some perfect tennis. I’m really excited about playing that match. Hopefully you guys can come out and we can produce something great out there.

Except for the first-round match, Sinner breezed past his opponents in straight sets. He came to New York on the back of a successful campaign at the Cincinnati Masters where he defeated home favorite Frances Tiafoe in straight sets in the final to lift his fifth trophy of the season.

Jannik Sinner reacts to Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic’s exit from US Open

There have so far been a couple of upsets at this US Open as Carlos Alcaraz, the champion in 2022, failed to reach even the third round, losing to Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets. Next, the tennis fraternity saw Novak Djokovic follow suit in the third round. The second seed was up against Alexei Popyrin and lost the match in four sets.

After his match against Christopher O’Connell, Jannik Sinner was asked what he thought about the two defeats.

As we see, anything can happen in this sport. I try to stay on my side of the net. Taking it day by day. Each opponent is a tough challenge.
Jannik Sinner said after the match

Following Alcaraz and Djokovic’s elimination, Sinner is considered the heavy favorite to win the title at Flushing Meadows for the first time. He is also bidding to win his second Grand Slam title, having won his first one this season at the Australian Open
