Toni Nadal Suggests Carlos Alcaraz May Not Meet Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon Because ‘Grass Is Treacherous Surface’
Carlos Alcaraz holds an 8-4 head-to-head record over Jannik Sinner, who recently lost in the Halle Open second round.

In his career that spanned over two decades, Rafael Nadal was successful in winning just four grass-court titles. According to his uncle and former coach, Toni Nadal, grass is a “treacherous surface” which is why he doesn’t think Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner would be pitted against each other in the Wimbledon final.
Alcaraz and Sinner met in a Grand Slam final for the first time two weeks ago. In the French Open final, the young Spaniard came from two sets down (and saved three match points in the fourth set) to overcome the Italian and defend his crown.
Sinner and Alcaraz will be the first and second seeds, respectively, at Wimbledon and will square off against each other if only they progress to the final. But according to Toni, big hitters like Ben Shelton may ruin the dream final.
Normally, you’d expect a Sinner-Alcaraz final, but since it’s a Slam tournament, there are always surprises. If you’re up against a Shelton or another big hitter, anything can happen, and important seeds can fall. Grass is a treacherous surface, where the match can quickly get out of hand.
Toni Nadal told La Gazzetta dello Sport
Alcaraz, after Roland Garros triumph, recorded fifth consecutive win over Sinner, improving his head-to-head record to 8-4. Both the players then started their grass-court campaigns.
Sinner failed to reach a final for the first time since last year’s Canadian Open after eventual winner Alexander Bublik knocked him out of the second round of the Halle Open. He was bidding to defend his title as well as win his second grass-court trophy of his career.
Alcaraz, however, carried his incredible form to the Queen’s Club Championships, winning his fourth grass-court title with a three-set win over Chile’s Jiri Lehecka. He is on an 18-match winning streak because, before London and Paris, he had also defeated the three-time Grand Slam champion in the Italian Open final.
Carlos Alcaraz shares his thoughts on Emma Raducanu watching his Queen’s match
Emma Raducanu was spotted in the stands of the Andy Murray Arena watching her US Open mixed doubles partner Carlos Alcaraz book a spot in the Queen’s final with a straight-set win over Roberto Bautista Agut in the last four. Alcaraz, at the press conference later, revealed that he had no idea about her presence at first.

I saw on social media she came up to watch my match. I’m just glad. I mean, I was focused on the match. I didn’t see her afterwards. I am just glad that she came to support me, to watch my match. Yeah, I think it was great having her in the stands.

A few days ago, Alcaraz revealed that he had made a “special request” to Raducanu to play the mixed doubles at the US Open and the Briton took some time to agree to this. Both the young players have lifted the US Open in their respective singles categories.
Raducanu scripted history when she won the Major at Flushing Meadows in 2021 as a qualifier. A year later, Alcaraz tasted success in a Major for the first time when he won the US Open.
While Alcaraz went on to capture four more Grand Slam titles, Raducanu is still searching for her second tour-level singles title since that historic run in New York. At the Queen’s, she was defeated in the quarterfinals by the 2024 Paris Olympic gold medalist Qinwen Zheng.
Both Alcaraz and Raducanu will start their preparation for Wimbledon, which starts on June 30. Raducanu has never progressed beyond the fourth round, while Alcaraz will be entering the grass-court Major as the two-time defending champion (beat Novak Djokovic in both finals).
