There is no more a Big Three on the men’s tennis tour. Two of the three greatest players of all time, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, are done competing for titles on the ATP Tour. While Federer hung up his racket in 2022, Nadal recently announced that he will hang up his racket after representing Spain in the Davis Cup Finals.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic is also picking and choosing which tournaments to take part in. Amid the debates of whether there will be another Big Three, Rafael Nadal’s uncle Toni Nadal feels otherwise. The renowned tennis coach who trained his nephew for years feels that three of the best players in the sport can’t play in the same era once again.

Toni cited the numbers to prove his point. He explained how the generations before Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal could not have a Big Three and thus the generation after will also not have one.

Despite the fact that Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are constantly challenging each other, Toni feels there is no one to challenge these two.

Before Djokvoc, Federer and Rafa, other ‘Big Three’ like Connors, McEnroe and Borg won 26 between them. Sampras, Agassi and Courier, 26. It’s very difficult for three of the greatest in history to meet in the same era. It’s true that now there are two who stand out above the rest, Alcaraz and Sinner, but I don’t see any youngster who can compete with them and that happened before.

Alcaraz and Sinner seem far ahead of their contemporaries. The two players shared the four Grand Slam titles in the 2024 season and rarely suffered defeats to players other than each other. Among the active players on the tour, only Djokovic has managed to challenge these two.

Toni Nadal feels Rafael Nadal could not get the desired end

Toni Nadal also spoke about his nephew’s retirement and claimed that Rafael Nadal did not get the ending he desired. The Spaniard’s childhood coach believes that Rafael would have liked one more good season on clay. However, Toni said that he always told the 22-time Grand Slam champion to not complain.

Rafa would have liked to have another good season on clay and that means winning or, at least, performing at a good level. He has not retired as he would have liked. I always told him not to complain because life has treated us better than we expected.

Rafael Nadal announced on Thursday that he will hang up his racket after the Davis Cup Final in Malaga. He has struggled with injuries in the last few years and has not been able to play at his best level. Nadal could not win any title this year. In fact, he last won a title at Roland Garros in 2022.
