Spanish tennis coach Toni Nadal is cherishing the emerging rivalry between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner on the ATP tour. The two tennis titans have swept the four Grand Slam titles this season, reminiscent of how Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal did in 2017.
Toni, who is Rafael’s uncle and spent most of his time as the left-hander’s coach, claims that Alcaraz would face some challenges dealing with Sinner’s game. The 63-year-old believes it is extremely difficult to force errors from Sinner’s racket, making it hard to earn free points against him.
Today, he has become a player who is practically unstoppable for the vast majority of his opponents. He is capable of delivering each of his strokes with great speed and of making very few unforced errors. Overcoming him from the back of the court is almost impossible...making the Italian miss was, as we could see (during Taylor Fritz match), practically impossible.Toni Nadal said to the Spanish Newspaper El Pais
However, in 2024, Alcaraz hasn’t faced many problems against the World No. 1. The duo has battled twice this season, with the Spaniard emerging victorious on both occasions. Their first meeting was in the Indian Wells semifinals, where Alcaraz ended Sinner’s unbeaten start to the season. Their second meeting was in the Roland Garros semifinals, where the 21-year-old beat the Italian in five sets in one of the matches of the year.
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner: The 2024 season overview
Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have undoubtedly set the benchmark for men’s tennis in 2024. The duo has won all four Grand Slams, with Sinner winning the Australian Open and the US Open, while Alcaraz claimed victories at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
Outside of the Grand Slams, they have also won five additional ATP titles. Alcaraz won the first Masters 1000 of the season at Indian Wells, including a victory over Sinner in the semifinals. However, that remains the Spaniard’s only title outside the Grand Slams this season.
Sinner has been the more consistent of the two, winning four ATP titles outside the Grand Slams, including two Masters 1000 titles in Miami and Cincinnati. The Italian has also won ATP 500 events in Rotterdam and Halle this season. The World No. 1 has 9,000 points in the ATP Race to Turin. He originally had 9,400 points, but 400 points were deducted from his total due to a doping controversy.
