Carlos Alcaraz is already seeking means to make sure he wins the 2025 Australian Open and has already revealed some plans. Recently, it was reported that his racket sponsor, Babolat, sent the Spaniard a different racket to try during the pre-season. The aim for that is because his team wants him to hit the ball harder and gain additional power in his shots.
Indeed, Alcaraz’s excitement for the Grand Slam event holds no bounds because if he does win, he will become the youngest player ever to win a Career Slam (all four Major titles). However, several obstacles may dampen his hopes of achieving the great feat. In this article, we will discuss the Top 3 reasons why the 21-year-old might not win the Melbourne Slam.
1) Carlos Alcaraz’s recent form
Alcaraz had a summer to remember this season after winning the French Open, Wimbledon Championship, and silver medal at the Paris Olympics. But after that, the Spaniard suffered a dipping form during the North American swing, which left him with just one win in two tournaments, including the US Open.
The disappointing display led the four-time major champion to rediscover his form in Beijing and he did that excellently. He defeated World No.1 Jannik Sinner in a three thriller to win the China Open. But, then, it didn’t take too long before he performed poorly again. He was beaten by Tomas Machac in the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters, before bowing out to Ugo Humbert in the early rounds of the Paris Masters.
The Spaniard then lost two of his three group matches at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, where he was eliminated in the round-robin stage. Also, he couldn’t save Spain at the Davis Cup Finals, as they crashed out after losing narrowly to the Netherlands.
2) Jannik Sinner’s hard court dominance
Sinner was undoubtedly the best men’s player of the year and by a mile above Alcaraz, who finished the year as World No.3. The Italian dominated the hard court more than any surface. The 23-year-old claimed a whopping seven of his eight tour-level titles on hard court this season. He also has the best tally on the surface 53-3 (94.6%). Two of the losses Sinner suffered came against his rival Alcaraz.
But the Spaniard did poorly on the hard court. However, he still had the second-best match-win percentage on the hard court, 78.4%, with a 29-8 record, winning only two titles on the surface at the Indian Wells Masters and China Open. With Sinner’s mind-blowing record on the hard court, it will only take an excellent performance for Alcaraz to oust him.
3) Other better hard court players in the draw ft. Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev and more
Ahead of the 2025 season, Novak Djokovic announced his partnership with Andy Murray as his coach. The Serbian will be targeting to win the Australian Open again, which he has done 10 times in his career. He also earned the third-best hard court record with a 76.2% win and a 16-5 win-loss record.
Also, Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov had a pretty good record too earning a 40-13 and 34-12, respectively. In fact, Zverev finished the year better than he started and in World No.2 after winning two Masters 1000 titles.
But, besides that, Alcaraz also has a major problem playing at AO. He has featured at the event three times but his best result is a run to the quarterfinals in 2024. In 2021, he lost to Mikael Ymer in the second round, while the following year, he exited the third round after losing to Matteo Berrettini in a five-set thriller.
