5. Gunther vs. Sami Zayn (WrestleMania XL Night 1)
Although many fans were upset with the decision of Sami Zayn going up against Gunther at WrestleMania XL, there was never any doubt that these two were going to put on one of the best WWE matches of 2024. The backstage segments prior to the underdog’s entrance emphasized the importance of this victory for the Canadian and helped give the fight a big-match feel.
After the two competitors stepped into the ring, it was pure magic. After a 666-day reign, Gunther had gotten cocky and started underestimating his opponent. This caused him to make mistakes, and this was all the opening that the challenger needed to turn things around. The ending to this match was accentuated by the brainbuster on the turnbuckle, and Zayn dethroning the dominant champion was a great feel-good moment.
4. Iyo Sky vs. Bayley (WrestleMania XL Night 2)
This was a stellar match put on by the two competitors that meant so much more than a title. Bayley had given it all to elevate the members of Damage CTRL but only got betrayal in return. The match had an incredible build-up, starting with the Role Model’s Royal Rumble victory.
These two competitors had incredible chemistry. They proved that they could tell a highly compelling story while delivering a technical masterclass. Bayley showed everyone why she used to be one of the top babyfaces in the company, and Iyo Sky truly felt like a demon that she had to overcome in their match. Finally, the 35-year-old overcoming her protege to win singles gold after years is one of the greatest WrestleMania moments of all time.
3. Cody Rhodes vs. AJ Styles (Backlash France)
AJ Styles truly provided a spectacular start to Cody Rhodes‘ reign as WWE Undisputed Champion. Although no one expected The American Nightmare to lose his first PLE defense, fans were sure these two superstars would put on a clinic in the ring, and it is safe to say that they delivered. The Phenomenal One also proved that he was far from being washed and is still a contender for the best in-ring worker active today, and maybe of all time.
While the in-ring work was flawless by these competitors throughout, the match was highly elevated by the French crowd. Not only was the audience a huge fan of Rhodes, but the cameras shaking due to the “Il est vraiment phénomenal” chants for Styles is a moment that will forever be etched in wrestling history.
2. Roman Reigns vs, Cody Rhodes (WrestleMania XL Night 2)
While this match is mostly remembered for the shocking and incredible appearances towards the end, this match is so much more than that. Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns were putting on a great show way before anyone else showed up. They were making good use of the stipulation by incorporating various weapons. This was a much better showdown than the one they had the year prior.
The match also featured many other characters who were getting their redemption. Jey Uso pushed his brother, Jimmy Uso, off the stage into a stack of tables after beating him the previous night. John Cena also got revenge against Solo Sikoa after getting demolished by him at the previous Crown Jewel event, which was a great moment to witness.
The Undertaker appeared out of nowhere to take out The Rock, and fans were standing up on their feet. Seth Rollins kept his promise to act as Rhodes’ shield, sacrificing himself to end the Roman Empire. The American Nightmare finally finishing his story is a moment that WWE may never be able to replicate ever again.
1. CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre (Bad Blood)
There aren’t enough good things that can be said about this match. Apart from putting on one of the best WWE matches of 2024, Drew McIntyre and CM Punk also deserve a lot of credit for reviving a stipulation that was considered dead by most fans.
The Hell in a Cell truly felt like a third character in their bout. Neither of them really wanted to put themselves through the brutality. However, they knew they had to do so to finally settle their feud. Furthermore, Punk asking for his wife while being unable to breathe after the match, and both competitors disappearing from TV really did miracles for selling the brutality.
The in-ring work felt stellar throughout and even felt uncomfortable to watch at times. McIntyre getting accidentally busted open into a pool of blood truly added an extra layer to the bout. This violent bloodbath was exactly what it needed to be. WWE made the right decision by not adding top-of-the-cell moments or the competitors breaking through the walls. This would definitely not fit the theme of the match, and it was good that the violence was contained inside it.
