The 2024 Open Championship will take place from July 18–21 at Royal Troon in Scotland. The event will feature a field of 156 players. The top 70 players and ties advance to the final two rounds. It will be played in a 72-hole stroke play format over four days.
The exact purse for the 2024 Open Championship has not been announced. However, last year’s event had a total purse of $14 million. The winner got approximately $2.5 million in the previous edition.
While some of the biggest names in golf will be competing at the Championship, a few superstars of the sport have also missed out on the qualifying.
Top 5 golfers to miss the Open Championship 2024
The 156-player field went through a highly competitive process to qualify. Big names including Sergio Gracia, Talor Gooch, and Thomas Detry have lost the chance to play.
Here is the list of players missing the 2024 Open Championship:
1. Sergio Garcia
The 2017 Masters champion and former world No. 2 player missed his second consecutive Open Championship after failing to qualify at the Final Qualifying event at West Lancs. Sergio Garcia has 10 top-10 finishes at The Open, including a runner-up in 2007, but will not have the chance to add to his Major tally this year.
Despite his natural ability to shape shots and hit it high and low, the Spaniard has surprisingly never won golf’s oldest Major.
2. Patrick Reed
The 2018 Masters champion missed his first Open Championship since 2013 after his exemption from that victory ran out. Reed had qualified for 41 consecutive Majors before missing the US Open last month, and the Open will be his next chance to add to his lone Major title. He has a best finish of T10 at The Open in 2019 at Royal Portrush.
3. Talor Gooch
The 2023 LIV Golf champion made just one Major appearance in 2024 at the PGA Championship, where he received an invitation. Despite his three wins on the LIV circuit last year, Gooch’s world ranking has continued to plummet, and he decided not to attempt to qualify for either the US Open or Open Championship this year. Gooch has played in the last three Open Championships, with a best finish of T33 in his debut in 2021.
4. Branden Grace
Grace famously became the first player to shoot 62 in a Major at The Open in 2017. However, he failed to qualify for this year’s championship after losing out in a playoff at the Final Qualifying event at Royal Cinque Ports. Brandon Grace has 11 Open Championship appearances under his belt. With a best finish of T6 in 2015.
5. Thomas Detry
The Belgian star is enjoying the best season of his career so far. With a T4 finish at the PGA Championship and a T14 at the US Open. However, that was not enough to earn him a spot at Royal Troon.
Detry has finished four shots back of the qualifying spots at the Final Qualifying event at Royal Cinque Ports. He is currently ranked 50th in the world, resulting in one of the highest-ranked players missing out on the Open this year.
