The advent of the T20 format led to a plethora of changes to the way cricket was played and more importantly, the mindset of the players. India’s annual franchise T20 tournament, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is a living proof of the change in focus. The tournament is known for quick runs being scored and huge sixes being hit. The likes of Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard to name a few, have all lit up the tournament with their big hits into the sky. 5. Chris Gayle -119 m

Chris Gayle who is well-known for his six-hitting ability put on a masterclass during his knock of 175* against the Pune Warriors India for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. The West Indian’s innings till date is the highest individual score in the history of the tournament. During his knock where he treated the bowlers with seemingly utmost contempt, Gayle dispatched left-arm spinner Ali Murtaza for a huge six that travelled 119 meters.
4. Robin Uthappa – 120 m

Robin Uthappa‘s name in this list should be a cause for surprise. The wicket-keeper batsman is not someone who is known for his powerful hitting. He is an elegant batsman who focuses more on timing and accuracy over brute force. However, he produced a six for the ages off Dwayne Bravo‘s bowling in IPL 2010 while appearing for Royal Challengers Bangalore and deposited the ball miles over the long-on fielder.
3. Adam Gilchrist – 122 m

Adam Gilchrist was one of the batsmen who revolutionized cricket with his aggressive approach long before the dawn of T20 cricket. It was thus, no surprise that he took to the format like a duck to water. During his stint at the IPL, the Australian icon lit up the tournament by showcasing his six-hitting prowess. One such big six came in 2011 when he hit South African Charl Langeveldt for a 122 meter six.
2. Praveen Kumar – 124 m

Praveen Kumar‘s name in this list and in the second spot at that should be the biggest surprise. The Indian international was one of the best swing bowlers in the country. But he was not in any way associated with hitting sixes. He could bat a bit and had shown glimpses in various matches but hitting a 124 meter six was just not thought of. But that was exactly what Praveen Kumar did as he hit Lasith Malinga of all people over long-off for a maximum.
1. Albie Morkel – 125 m

Albie Morkel was a huge asset to the Chennai Super Kings team with his all-rounder displays. The South African enthralled fans during his stint with the franchise with his enormous sixes. His 28-run over against Virat Kohli is etched in IPL folklore forever. But this six – the longest six in IPL history did not come off the Indian spinner’s bowling. It was hit off spinner Pragyan Ojha‘s bowling. Albie pounced on a tossed up delivery and hit it high and long over mid-wicket during the inaugural edition of the IPL and the maximum till date stands as the longest of them all.
