Just like the last season, Team Mercedes looks to be the favorite to win the 2021 season. Under the leadership of Toto Wolff, the Brackley-based outfit has won the last 7 double championship consecutively. Having said that, in a recent interview Wolff emphasized about the danger that lurks upon his and his team’s shoulder going into the upcoming F1 season. His indicates to none other than Daniel Ricciardo

He believes the new Red Bull driver could be a potential threat to Mercedes. Wolff also pointed out that the Australian in his McLaren with a new Mercedes power unit could be another threat. McLaren recorded their best season since 2012. Having had a new and powerful Mercedes engine and positive mindset with the Honey Badger joining in, McLaren could pull off some upsets in the 2021 season for sure.

Toto Wolff talks about the danger Daniel Ricciardo could impose onto Mercedes

“(You can) cause surprises with Daniel Ricciardo, if not even ride up front,” Wolff said as per RTL. The Australian helped Renault record an impressive improvement in 2020. He claimed 2 podium finishes for the team and finished the season in the P5 position.

The team’s current Technical Director, James Key, has previously worked with the Australian back in Toro Rosso and believes Ricciardo will add substantial value to the team. “I think he can compete at [the top echelons of the sport], and we’ve seen him do it in past years.”

“I think he’s one of those drivers who could step into any one of the top teams and do well… I rate him extremely highly,” said James as quoted by Formula 1.

Daniel Ricciardo has been looking forward to joining McLaren. He believes the team could offer the platform he needs to become a world champion. The 2022 regulations could make Ricciardo a serious threat to Mercedes.
