The San Francisco 49ers are on a mission this season. They want to avenge the loss at the last Super Bowl with a run this year. They have the players and the staff working towards it as the team participates in training camp in full gear.

Unfortunately, at the moment, Brandon Aiyuk is not part of it owing to his contract holdout. But news came in that Trent Williams was joining him in staying out.

Reporter Ari Meirov revealed through his official X account that the superstar left tackle has decided to sit on the sidelines. The reason is that he wants his contract reworked. But it seems the 49ers have not yet complied with his request and therefore, forced him to rest.

It seems he is looking for an upgrade over the $23 million average he currently receives. That is considering the recent contract for Penei Sewell has reset the yearly average salary.

After all, he is still the best tackle in the league. He would want to be paid like one. Despite his age, the 6′ 5″ 320lb star has made it to the first-team All-Pro for three straight seasons. Knowing how to play for his age has helped him play at an elite level.

Trent Williams surely thinks he is capable of playing for a few more years and would like to be paid as per new league standards for those years. But this has developed into a precarious situation for the franchise. Considering, he is now the second core offensive player after Brandon Aiyuk to take a stand.

Trent Williams and the gold standard of NFL offensive tackles

Trent Williams stepped into the NFL in 2010 as a 4th overall pick. Suggesting that he was already that good at his position. It was evident when in the first 9 seasons with the Washington Commanders, he was named a Pro-Bowler 7 times.

That should give an indication of his dominance. However, it was after he moved to the San Francisco 49ers that he took his play to a different level.

Reunited with Kyle Shanahan, the star tackle became the leader of the offensive line despite the presence of veterans. His smart play ensured that he was not physically taxed as the season progressed. This enabled him to play in the playoffs and the Super Bowl. In three out of his four seasons in the Bay Area, he is a consensus first-team All-Pro.

He might be on the wrong side of 30, but he is still the gold standard of offensive tackles. That is an elite level he has worked himself into, considering the competition. No wonder he is looking towards a last big payday, and win a Super Bowl at that.
