The Jacksonville Jaguars made one of the earliest moves at the 2025 Annual Player Selection Meeting in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Jaguars, tormented by years of unfortunate season endings, selected the highly sought-after two-way star from the Colorado Buffaloes, Travis Hunter, after swapping with the Cleveland Browns.

The Jaguars, established as an expansion team in 1995 alongside the Carolina Panthers, are one of the four active teams to have never played the Super Bowl. Although they enjoyed success early on, the trend quickly disappeared after the turn of the century. Since 2000, they have made the playoffs only four times while winning the division on two occasions.

The fans are hungry for any ample of success, which has been rejuvenated after the selection of Travis Hunter in the draft. There’s a major wave of hope riding on the young wideout/cornerback. However, their quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, has issued a warning while complimenting the dedication of the player.

Travis has been great. Just his work ethic, how he’s come in. He has been one of the hardest-working guys we have. I think it is the commitment to learning the playbook and trying to learn the two systems. It’s a lot on a rookie.

Trevor Lawrence said as per Jamal St. Cyr of News4JAX

It’s true, it’s a lot for a rookie to adapt and adopt the different system. The pros are much different than college games, and Lawrence knows it better than anyone. Furthermore, there’s added pressure from several sides about his capabilities to perform better in both roles. In addition to Lawrence, there has been strong support for the Buffs’ product from various players on the roster.

Trevor Lawrence needs to step up for the Jags

Travis Hunter or any wideout can only score if Trevor Lawrence gets the ball to their hands effectively. In his fifth season, following an injury-shortened affair, all eyes are on the former collegiate champion and Tennessee native, Lawrence.

According to Rich Hribar of Sharp Analysis, Lawrence currently sits in the top-12 to 21 range among NFL quarterbacks based on 2025 expectations. The standings translate to solid, but not franchise-defining, in short, good but not good enough.

Hribar noted that despite the potential for a quick-passing scheme under new head coach Liam Coen, Lawrence’s efficiency on short throws remains a red flag. When it comes to passes under ten yards, Lawrence has only completed just 69.4% of them, which is well below the league average of 74.2%. Furthermore, he has also ranked poorly in turnover-worthy throws and interception rate.

The former No. 1 overall pick has flashed brilliance before, particularly in the latter half of 2022, but consistency has eluded him. His 2023 campaign began with promise, but injuries and a weakened supporting cast derailed momentum. By the end of 2024, an AC sprain sidelined him completely.

This doesn’t mean that all hope’s dead. The Jaguars have reinforced the offensive line and added depth to Lawrence’s receiving corps. Sure, Rich Hribar’s analysis does state Coen’s quick-passing scheme, and Lawrence might not be a good fit. However, the stalwart has revitalized many quarterbacks, including Baker Mayfield, who now posts career numbers every game.

On the Check The Mic podcast, Steve Palazzolo and Steve Monson discussed the Jaguars’ outlook for next season and took a closer look at the Jags’ QB. Palazzolo compared Lawrence’s early struggles to those of Matthew Stafford, suggesting there’s still hope for improvement. However, both analysts agreed that Lawrence may not reach the star-level expectations he carried coming out of college.
