Trevor Lawrence looked good for most of the game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. The Jacksonville Jaguars entered the fourth quarter firmly in the driver’s seat with a four-point lead. With the Bengals missing their starting quarterback, a win looked certain on the cards until a turnover turned the tide.

The Jags were already losing grip on the game despite the lead. Fans caught a small glimpse when footage surfaced of a heated exchange between Lawrence and head coach Liam Coen.

Lawrence threw a sharp pass to wide receiver Dyami Brown, which he failed to control. The ball slipped out of his hands. It was second down, but Coen wasn’t happy, and he expressed his frustration by slapping his chest, indicating to Lawrence to throw the ball at Brown’s chest.

The former first overall pick saw his agitated coach on the sideline and just waved him off.

Coen declined to entertain the thought of any tension between him and his quarterback. He was pissed, but at the same time, it was only one pass.

It is what it is. That’s emotion. It’s not personal ever. That’s just kind of me getting worked up.

Liam Coen said in the post-game presser

Coen diverted the media’s attention by praising Lawrence’s next play that hit second-year receiver Brian Thomas Jr.’s hand before falling to the ground.

[Lawrence] threw a dime in the back of the end zone. We don’t make a play. I was very pleased with his competitive nature. The way he stayed calm on the sidelines. He’s pretty even-keeled, which is good for me.

Coen added

The Bengals received the ball on downs. QB2 Jake Browning, who replaced injured Joe Burrow in the first half, scrambled one yard to give his team the lead.

Lawrence took a sack from Trey Hendrickson to start the penultimate drive, losing 10 yards. In the following play, he found Parker Washington, who lateraled the ball to Travis Etienne Jr., but he failed to hold on. The ball went out of bounds, and the game ended. It ended in a 27-31 for the Jaguars.

Trevor Lawrence reacted to the heated moment with Liam Coen

The Jaguars brought in Coen after firing Doug Pederson. Coen was the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, drawing up plays for Baker Mayfield.

Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter was added to reduce the workload of Brian Thomas. Etienne stayed on the roster despite rumors of an imminent trade.

The Jaguars defeated the Carolina Panthers in week one and looked to build on it by recording a win over the Bengals. Burrow’s injury appeared like a boon for Coen, but too many penalties and turnovers came back to haunt them.

Lawrence was obviously disappointed with the result. However, he stood by his coach and played down the heated exchange.

Coach is really passionate, which is something that I’ve noticed ever since he’s been here. I love that about him, and we’ll get fired up.

Lawrence threw 24 completions from 42 attempts for 271 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. He registered a measly 34.9 QBR. Two games down, 15 more to go. Up next, the Jags face off against divisional rivals, the Houston Texans, in week three.
