With the rise of divisional rival Houston Texans, the Jaguars’ aim for 2024 playoffs seems a bit far-fetched.

It appears the Jacksonville Jaguars are set to be the next team to offer their quarterback an above-50 million extension deal as his rookie contract comes to an end. As ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Trevor Lawrence is in line to get a huge extension from the Jaguars in the foreseeable future.

Despite leading the AFC South division for the majority of the season, the Jaguars failed to make the playoffs last season in 2023. With the rise of divisional rival Houston Texans, the Jaguars’ aim for the 2024 playoffs, as well, seems a bit far-fetched.

However, that sure doesn’t stop the franchise from making efforts to improvise its active roster. So they did this offseason with the addition of Gabe Davis and Brian Thomas. As they prepare for the upcoming regular season, the Jaguars are yet to retain one crucial player in a long-term extension, who intends to bring back his Pro Bowl form from the 2022 season.

Even though Lawrence hasn’t been able to live up to the standards of being the no. 1 overall pick of the 2021 NFL draft, he hasn’t fallen to deep ends because of the protection and offensive weapon handed over to him.

With that being said, 50+ million yearly earnings for a quarterback such as Lawrence seemed a bit overpaid, just like many considered the Detriot Lions’ move to pay $212 million to star quarterback Jared Goff, who has now become the second highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.

Fans react to Trevor Lawrence’s massive potential extension

Just like many questioned Goff’s extension, fans don’t seem to be on board with Lawrence in line to become one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league– to the same level as elite players such as Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes, and Lamar Jackson

One fan wrote, “Don’t u want him to get one so the jags are stuck with a trash qb,” while another wrote, “He doesn’t deserve one.” Here are some of the fan reactions:

The report by Fowler caused a stir on social media, where fans have been expressing their disbelief over Lawrence’s potential extension. Perhaps, if the deal does happen, it would put a lot of pressure on Lawrence to up his game and make the Jaguars a Super Bowl contender again.
