Trish Stratus reveals she came out of retirement due to Becky Lynch (via WWE)
Trish Stratus retired from professional wrestling during the Ruthless Aggression era with an already Hall of Fame career. The 48-year-old had another stellar run with the company in 2023 with an incredible feud against Becky Lynch over the summer. She recently talked about how this return to the Stamford-based promotion came about.
In an interview with Inside The Ropes, Stratus revealed that Becky Lynch called her and pitched a match against her for WrestleMania. She quite liked the idea. However, they thought that the 7x Women’s Champion turning on Lita would have more impact than her turning on The Man. After all, the two Hall of Famers had been friends for more than two decades.
Meanwhile, Stratus and Lynch had no prior history on TV. Thus, the turn would have no impact. The three superstars eventually teamed up at WrestleMania 39 to take on Damage CTRL. After this match in Los Angeles, things went as planned, and the two superstars had a feud on Raw.
Trish Stratus came in shortly after WrestleMania, turned heel, and was involved in a weekly storyline. Lynch fought against the Hall of Famer and her protege Zoey Stark throughout the summer of 2023. Their feud eventually ended with a stellar steel cage match at Payback 2023. This marked the last appearance of her run, and she has not been an active member of the roster since.

The majority of Stratus’ return in 2023 was spent with her acting as a heel. This is quite unlike other wrestling legends returning to the company. They generally return to the company as beloved figures, and it is hard to get the fans to boo them in the first place. However, the Hall of Famer took this challenge head-on.
During the same interview, Trish Stratus said that she liked to surprise people. She thought about making her return to the company different from the norm. Furthermore, she hadn’t touched a heel run in a long while and wanted to challenge herself as a performer.
Stratus played one of the best female heel characters ever seen in WWE, being a great villain to Lita and others. However, she had spent the last twelve months of her active career in 2006 as a babyface. On top of that, she had been away from wrestling for nearly 17 years. This did not stop the 48-year-old from putting on a great performance and having an incredible feud with Becky Lynch.
