At long last, the Miami Dolphins listened to Tyreek Hill and gave quarterback Tua Tagovailoa a contract extension. There was news floating around about the Dolphins front office speaking with Tua’s agent, and sure enough, he got paid handsomely.

The 26-year-old entered his contract year with enough evidence in the Dolphins’ hands for them to give him an extension. Last season, in particular, he looked much improved compared to his previous years.

Tagovailoa led the league in passing yards and threw a career-best 29 touchdowns, taking the Dolphins to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons. Unlike others throughout the league, he showed up to the team’s minicamp and took part in the first couple of days of training camp.

All-Pro receiver Tyreek Hill urged the Dolphins to wrap up Tagovailoa’s contract before the season began—he has his own reasons. Eventually, they caved in and penned a four-year $212 million deal on Friday, July 26.

As per Spotrac, Tua will earn an annual salary of $53 million. He will also earn $167 million in guarantees over the next three years, placing him just after Jared Goff as the 8th highest in the NFL and the most in Dolphins history.

Shortly after NFL Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo announced the details of the deal, social media went wild. Most fans rubbed their eyes several times until reality sunk in. As per their assessment, paying a large sum of money to a quarterback who has not even won playoffs game wasn’t a great move from the Dolphins.

Hill was definitely happy to see the Dolphins finally listening to his plea.

Safety Jordan Poyer congratulated his quarterback.

Judging by the tweets, most of them viewed the amount as too inflated despite the market standards. However, they failed to notice the wording of the contract. Rapoport mentioned $167 million in guarantees, which doesn’t mean the Dolphins are legally bound to pay him no matter how poorly he played—kind of opposite of the Deshaun Watson and Russell Wilson situation.

This is where General Manager Chris Grier carefully constructed the contract. Even though the Dolphins agreed to pay Tagovailoa $212 million, they have the leverage of choosing not to pay the Alabama graduate if the performance is not up to their standards.

For Tagovailoa to avail all the money he needs to constantly keep up with the elite, which he failed last year. His deal is similar to Tyreek Hill’s in some ways.

Well, the Dolphins have given Tua all the tools he needs to go and win the Super Bowl. Besides Hill, they have Jaylen Waddle, Raheem Mostert, De’Von Achane, and Braxton Berrios—a myriad of options in the offense.
