A 2013 tweet made by Twitter user @lawseyitfc resurfaced after eight years as he correctly predicted both the finalists, winner, and the occurrence of the penalty shootout. Italy beat England 3-2 on penalties in the recently concluded Euro 2020 final after 120 minutes of action ended in a 1-1 draw.
Even before the final, the tweet had started gaining popularity among users, with people shocked at the accuracy of the tweet which had got the finalists right eight years in advance. However, after Gianluigi Donnarumma saved Bukayo Saka’s penalty which resulted in Italy defeating England, the tweet went viral for correctly predicting the winner and mentioning the penalty shootout too.
The tweet and its reactions
“England just lost the euro 2020 final against Italy on a penalty shoot out, nothing has changed then!” the tweet says. The Twitter user tried his best to avert the result for his nation by blotting out the word ‘lost’ with ‘won’ at half-time, replying to his original tweet, but that was of no avail as Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all missed their penalty attempts: ensuring that his original tweet came true as prophesied.
Gianluigi Donnarumma, Italy’s penalty shootout hero, won the Player of the Tournament award for his brilliant performances against both Spain in the semifinals and England in the finals as Italy won both matches in penalty shootouts. The other awards included Romelu Lukaku winning the Bronze Boot and Patrick Schick coming second in the top scorers’ list: check out the full list here.
The tweet also had other Twitter users marvelling at its accuracy, and here are some of the best reactions to it:
