Shaili Singh
Indian long jumper Shaili Singh has bagged India’s third medal at the U20 World Athletics Championships. Shaili ended up second with a personal best effort of 6.59m in Nairobi. Sweden’s Maja Askag took the pole position by a centimetre as she registered a best jump of 6.60m.
With the gold medal, Askag becomes the 2nd woman to achieve the U20 world titles in Triple Jump and Long Jump in the same Championship. Prior to this, Russia’s Yelena Lysak was the only athlete to have achieved the feat back in 1994.
While Shaili’s effort is better than her previous best, which is also the national junior record, a wind of +2.2 m/s means her effort will not be considered as a national record. Nonetheless, the teenager put her best foot forward to bag India’s eighth medal in the history of the event.

India won its second medal of the World Championships as Amit Khatri won silver in the men’s 10km race walk. Khatri clocked 42:17.94s to finish second behind Kenya’s Heristone Wanyoni.
