The welterweight contest between Geoff Neal (13-4 MMA, 5-2 UFC) and Santiago Ponzinibbio (28-4 MMA, 10-3 UFC) was a much-anticipated bout at the main card of UFC 269. Neal is coming off from a loss and Ponzinibbio was on the win column, it was an important fight for both of them, and they certainly fought the same way.

Round 1 – Neal started off really well, and stopped Ponzinibbio in his tracks with a stinging jab, he was moving really well, and didn’t give Ponzinibbio any chance to get his offense going. Big head kick lands from Neal, and his opponent got a warning for overextending his fingers. The fight continues and Ponzinibbio once again gets a warning from the ref. Neal landed a nice combination to end the round.

Round 2 – Neal became a bit busier with the hands, and started cracking Ponzinibbio in this round. Santiago started blasting him with the leg kicks, and they were working really well, Neal stunned Santiago with a right hand, but he recovered well, and landed the only takedown of this fight. Strong leg kicks from Santiago threw Neal off balance, but nothing significant landed.

Round 3 – Santiago was looking more aggressive in this one, and he started letting his hands go. Santiago was now sitting on his punches, and he was swinging hard, a couple of shots hurt Neal, but he recovered well and took his time to find the big shots. Neal started teeing off on Santiago and finished the round strong. A great addition to the main card of UFC 269.

Result: Geoff Neal def. Santiago Ponzinibbio via split decision (28-29, 30-27, 29-28)
